It is one of the biggest items on the grocery list for Thanksgiving, the turkey. But will it be a big hit to the wallet?
"Right now for a frozen turkey, a 16-pound frozen turkey, you are looking around $20 for that. That is about 16% cheaper than it was last year and last year was cheaper than the year before," says Caleb Silver, editor in chief at Investopedia.
Why the drop? Silver says a big avian flu decimated turkey products back in 2022, causing prices to rise. It has taken a few years, but prices are coming down. Silver says, "those have come down substantially, and that is bringing the overall cost of the Thanksgiving meal down in 2024."
Still, want to pay even less? You may be sitting on a free turkey! Some grocery stores like ShopRite offer discounts or reward points to trade in for the turkey.
Through ShopRite's reward, if you spend $400 between Oct. 20 through Nov. 28, you get a free or discounted holiday item.
Other deals this year, Target has an offer to feed four people for $20 this Thanksgiving, they say it is $5 less than last year.
And if you want to feed 10 people, Aldi says you can do it through them for less than $47. Their website says it is the lowest priced Thanksgiving basket they have had since 2019.
