Suffolk County police say they are now warning residents of a nationwide internet scam that is being shared on social media accounts in the county.
The post says someone claims their son from Copiague is missing, but Suffolk police commissioner Rodney Harrison says they went to Copiague and there's nobody missing of that person’s name.
Harrison added if this post has been shared by a friend on social media and you see or have seen it, to block it out and don't entertain it.
Tech expert Lance Ulanoff agrees with Harrison and told News 12 people should even take things a step further if you realize a post like this is a fake.
“You could in your small circle of friends on Facebook just say, ‘hey just so you know when your fake post going around it has this name in it’,” Ulanoff said. “I'm not repeating the whole thing but just know this is fake and don't react.”
Harrison says police are now trying to identify the person responsible for posting hoax missing person alerts, and that they don't know anything about the child used in this most recent post.
