The third annual Learn-to-Skate event was held Saturday in East Meadow, giving children of all abilities a chance to lace up their skates and take to the ice.
The event at the Northwell Health Ice Center welcomed kids ages 4 to 12.
“So the reason why we started this was because I have a son that is special needs,” said organizer Brittany Livingston. “Being the parent of a special needs child, there isn't a lot of activities that you can sign up for where you feel welcome and comfortable. So I wanted to make a program that could have that exclusivity and make it the best for them."
Almost 50 kids attended the program. Hockey players from local teams volunteered to help.
Parents say it brings a smile to their faces.
“It's a great experience,” said Shibani Michra, a parent with twin boys who have special needs. “This was the first time for my boys, and they were nervous. I was nervous, but it looks like they really had a good time. And I'm really happy that they're organizing these games for the kids with special needs. And this gives them an opportunity to explore something new and have a really great time.”
News 12 sponsored the event.
