Suffolk County police said a Massapequa man is dead after a fiery, one-car crash in Bay Shore on Saturday afternoon.
Detectives say 30-year-old Devin Wolfe was driving a 2017 Infiniti sedan northbound on Howells Road when the vehicle left the roadway, went onto the curb and struck a Sunrise Highway overpass shortly before 4:45 p.m.
Nicholas Trovato, of JTI's American Kitchen & Bar, said he had just seen the car before it lost control and crashed. He said the car sped up before it swerved, hit an embankment and spun under the bridge.
Eyewitnesses told News 12 Long Island they tried to save the driver, but the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames within seconds.
Trovato said he picked up an object that he would use to break the car's window when the first explosion of the car went off, setting the vehicle ablaze.
Eyewitness Zach Sheridan was across the street from the crash. He said he felt the heat of the intense flames.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known.
Northbound on Howells Road was still closed as of Saturday night as the investigation continued.
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the Suffolk County Police Department's Third Squad at 631-854-8352.
