A man accused of boating while intoxicated was arrested after a chaotic attempt to flee authorities Friday night in West Islip, according to Suffolk police.

Officials say the marine bureau and Coast Guard responded after receiving a 911 call reporting a vessel moving erratically in the water of Great South Bay near Captree Island.

When the Coast Guard arrived at the scene around 8 p.m., police say 58-year-old Abimal Acosta tried to escape.

The 24-foot vessel ended up beaching nearby, leading the engine to overheat and catch fire. Acosta shut off the engine, which extinguished the flames.

He was then taken into custody and brought to Timber Point. A Suffolk County Police SAFE-Team officer responded for field testing and arrested him.

Police say Acosta is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Saturday.
