A Coram mom was seriously injured after a driver plowed into her and fled the scene, and now police are trying to track down the driver.

Karen Benjamin's daughter tells News 12 that her mother had brain surgery last night at Stony Brook University Hospital.

Police say the 56-year-old was hit while jogging along Canal Road in Mount Sinai around 11 a.m. yesterday.

Police say Benjamin, who works as a physician's assistant, is in a coma after sustaining near-fatal injuries to her head, arms and legs.

Her tearful family pleaded for anyone with information to come forward today, and they extolled her as a great mother who is enthusiastic about fitness.

Authorities describe the vehicle that hit Benjamin as a light-colored 2000 to 2003 BMW sedan or station wagon with front and side passenger damage. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
