A portion of Route 111 between 454 and 347 in Hauppauge was renamed in honor of NYC Port Authority Police Officer Steven Tursellino on Saturday.
The section is now known as Steven J. Tursellino Memorial Highway. Tursellino started his law enforcement career with the New York City Police Department and later joined the NYC Port Authority.
He was one of a number of first responders who worked in the recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site after Sept. 11, 2001. Tursellino later became sick from the toxic exposure.
Officials say that despite his 9/11-related illness, Tursellino continued to work serving others until he died in 2013.
"He was a humble guy and would not want all this attention, but he would be so touched to see so many people come out for him," said his wife, Lisa Tursellino.
Close to 100 people from the community came out to Saturday's dedication ceremony.
