Multiple police agencies tell News 12 they are stepping up patrols and increasing security for at-risk locations ahead of the Jewish High Holy Days and in response to Iran's attack on Israel.
“The Nassau County Police Department has already increased and intensified patrols around all Houses of Worship and will continue during the High Holy Days," said Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder in a statement to News 12.
"Our Intelligence Unit is coordinating with local, state and federal partners receiving updates on a daily basis, disseminating this information throughout our department. County Executive Bruce Blakeman has been made aware that there are no credible threats to Nassau County and encourages our officers to remain vigilant during these concerning times. Residents are reminded to call 911 immediately if they see or hear anything suspicious.”
In posts on social media, Gov. Kathy Hochul and Suffolk police also laid out details about increased patrols.
News 12 spoke with Long Island religious leaders about the impact of the stepped-up patrols and increased security.
"We are very happy for the presence of police, it doesn't bring alarm, it actually does the opposite, it allows people to feel a sense of security when they walk into a building," said Rabbi Deborah Bravo, founder of Makom NY in Bethpage.
"Nassau police, they're very vigilant and they're good, I mean I really appreciate their help," said Abdul Aziz Bhuiyan, chairman of Hillside Islamic Center.Gov.
Hochul says there are no credible threats at this time to New Yorkers, and police are asking any suspicious activity to be reported to them as soon as possible.
