Seniors of St. Anthony's High School and members of the school's row team lined their cars up in Central Islip to surprise the mother of a classmate who was heading home from the hospital.
They say their teammate's mother, Wanda Matthew, had to be hospitalized with COVID-19, and they wanted to be there to support her and her family.
"Every parent here contributed with food or money or cooking,” said organizer Therese Mahar. “We were shuffling stuff back and forth, being safe."
The guest of honor was lured out of her house, being told she was going to get a special delivery of food, but the surprise was much bigger than that.
The procession of cars bearing St. Anthony's colors drove by Matthew's home, making as much noise as they could.
"I feel wonderful,” said Matthew. “I came home Sunday after being in the hospital for a week. I’m back to work, I'm breathing on my own... You couldn't ask for a better family of friends."
