A South Setauket father was charged Thursday for allegedly abusing his newborn son.

Prosecutors say Vincent Distasi hurt the 5-week-old child so badly that the infant needed lifesaving brain surgery.

Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly says the abuse was captured on camera.

"That camera installed to protect the security of Distasi's home instead captured stomach turning events of abuse," Donnelly says. "Vincent Distasi allegedly manhandled his son on multiple occasions in the first few days of life, punching the baby, smothering him, tossing him around and choking him repeatedly. Some of the alleged abuse even took place in front of Distasi's toddler daughter."

Distasi pleaded not guilty and is currently out on $300,000 cash bail. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison.
