Charges could be filed against the man who killed a Long Island firefighter while hunting upstate.

State police say 52-year-old firefighter Charles Bruce, of Franklin Square, was shot and killed by his friend and fellow firefighter during a hunting trip over the weekend in Westford. Authorities say it was getting dark, and the shooter mistook his friend for a deer.

District Attorney John Muehl says there were no drugs or alcohol involved, and the shooting was not intentional. Still, he says it was either reckless or negligent. Once police wrap up their investigation, he will likely ask a grand jury to decide whether the shooter should be charged with criminally negligent homicide or manslaughter.

The name of the shooter has not been released since he has not been charged. The district attorney tells News 12 it could be between two and three months before he brings the full case to a grand jury.

Bruce was a longtime volunteer firefighter with the Malverne Fire Department. He leaves behind two children, ages 18 and 22.
