A recently released report says Sunrise Highway is the most dangerous road on Long Island for pedestrians.

The report was released by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign.

It says that there have been 15 fatalities in both Nassau and Suffolk on Sunrise Highway in the past three years.

Hempstead Turnpike, formerly the most dangerous, has seen 12 pedestrian deaths. Middle Country Road in Suffolk has also seen 12 deaths.

The DOT says it has installed dozens of crosswalks to improve safety, as well as countdown timers to let pedestrians know how much time they have left to safely cross, but some safety experts say that's not enough."Pedestrians that come out in there are really taking their lives in their hands when they do," says Robert Sinclair, of AAA New York.

Safety experts suggest Sunrise Highway could use more islands or center medians, more crosswalks and pedestrian signal lights.

The DOT says it's making progress on pedestrian safety, citing advances like fencing designed to prevent jaywalking. It says pedestrian safety is a shared responsibility and that both motorists and pedestrians need to use good judgment.
