Remote control car with lithium-ion battery sparks East Rockaway fire

A toy car is to blame for a fire at a home in Nassau County Thursday afternoon.
The East Rockaway Fire Department was alerted to the blaze at the house on Lawson Ave in East Rockaway.
Upon arrival, Ladder 403 and Engine 404 found a smoke condition in the basement of the structure and began working to find the source.
Following an investigation, firefighters discovered a remote-control car that was charging had burst into flames, officials say.
Crews removed the toy, which contains a lithium-ion battery, from the residence and made sure it was fully extinguished.
The Nassau Fire Marshal was alerted to respond to the scene as well, due to the presence of the battery.
There were no injuries reported.
“It is extremely important to never allow lithium-ion batteries to charge unattended and should be done outside if possible,” the East Rockaway Fire Department reminded residents.
