Construction begins for affordable housing development in Port Jefferson

A 53-unit affordable housing development will soon be built in Port Jefferson.
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the start of construction for the $38 million project on Thursday.
She says it aims to replace vacant properties on Perry and Main Street with modern living spaces.
The area is just a block away from the LIRR station, making it convenient for travel and work opportunities.
“Perry & Main demonstrates my administration’s commitment to ensuring more New Yorkers have access to high-quality affordable housing in communities where they can thrive,” she said. “By bringing this modern development to a key corner in the village’s downtown next to transit, we can connect the building’s residents to opportunities, support local businesses and the workforce, and continue Port Jefferson’s revitalization.
The development will include 33 one-bedroom apartments and 20 two-bedroom apartments affordable to households earning up to 80% of the area median income.
Five units will be reserved for people with developmental disabilities, six will accommodate those with mobility disabilities and two others will accommodate those with sensory disabilities.
Veterans will also be given preference for another five units, according to officials.
