The winner of the third annual New York Islanders jersey design contest spoke to News 12 about the shocking moment he heard about his victory.

Lifelong Islanders fan James Doyle’s submission was chosen out of a selection of 80,000 in multiple voting rounds.

He says the design was inspired by the team’s 90s jersey color scheme featuring the lighthouse shoulder patch.

The 22-year-old Elmont resident was in disbelief when he found out he won.

“I thought it was a scam call at first, so I didn’t even answer, I didn’t think it was real. I found out it was real and I was like ‘oh wow!’ Its probably one of the coolest things to ever happen to me, honestly,” he said.

The Islanders are working to turn the digital design into a real NHL jersey that meets league rules.

Team officials say Doyle will get VIP tickets when the jersey hits the ice next season.
