A public meeting was held tonight to discuss whether underwater gas terminals should be built off the coasts of Jones Beach and New Jersey.

The terminals would be located 18.5 miles south of Jones Beach and nearly 29 miles east of New Jersey.

Liberty Natural Gas says the plant would help reduce and stabilize energy prices for New York consumers during the peak winter and summer months while utilizing state of the art environmental technologies.

But environmentalists are worried about what the plan would mean for water quality. The proposed site is also the exact location where some environmentalists have been looking to build an offshore wind farm.
