A Molloy University student is developing a project he hopes could one day help doctors detect cancer earlier.

Senior Liam Fleck is developing software designed to analyze medical images for possible signs of cancer. The program uses image recognition, training artificial intelligence on medical scans so it can learn to identify patterns associated with cancer.

Fleck said his ultimate goal is to detect any cancer in the body with a full-body scan.

"One scan and you'll be able to know in a week or two, 'Am I safe, am I good?'" Fleck said. "For those who are cancer positive, it would go to a doctor and highlight the areas that are of concern."

The technology is still in development. Fleck said he needs access to more medical imaging data from hospitals and medical schools to further train and test the software.
