One day after President George W. Bush unveiled a revised strategy for U.S. policy in Iraq, Long Island residents voiced strong opinions.
Bush's plan calls for 21,500 additional troops to be deployed to Iraq, most of whom will serve in Baghdad. The president says the increase in troop levels will attempt to counter an increase in sectarian violence that plagued political progress in the past year. One Long Island veteran who served in Vietnam believes if the commanders need more feet on the ground, the country should support the move.
Across the Island and the nation, people are singing a different tune. Another Long Island veteran of Vietnam says Bush has failed, and any last-ditch effort would waste American lives. A Hauppauge woman agreed, saying the president seems to be in denial and it is best to withdraw from the troubled country.
