Police say a 26-year-old Freeport man was shot in Port Jefferson Station late Tuesday night.
Suffolk police say when officers arrived at the scene, they found Angel Bermudez in the backyard of a home on Pine Street with two gunshot wounds.
The victim, who is now in serious but stable condition, had just left a party at a house there when the gunman opened fire.
"Concern for the individual who got shot," says Councilmember Jonathan Kornreich. "Frustration because Port Jeff Station is a great community and it's a great place to live and there are some problems that are starting that we're seeing."
As News 12 has reported, this is not the first or even second shooting to happen in the area. Back in June, there was a double shooting in Port Jefferson Village and in March, a man in the village was shot and killed.
After those shootings, Suffolk police released a statement to News 12 that stated in part that "they were in the process of reviewing bolstering patrols on the weekends and other measures to add to the police presence in the area."
Kornreich is calling on police to step up patrols in Port Jefferson Station.
"We've called on the county for them to invest greater resources in enforcement in that area and that's really what we're looking for is greater enforcement to prevent these problems from really getting out of control."
So far, police have not made any arrests.
Authorities are asking anyone with information to call Suffolk Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
