Police say a pit bull attacked a 7-year-old girl Wednesday evening in a Bieselin Road home in Bellport.
Police say the child was playing with the dog when it went after her. They say it also attacked her mother and the mother's boyfriend when they tried to intervene.
The girl's uncle finally stopped the dog by hitting it with a shovel.
Emergency services airlifted the mother and daughter to Stony Brook University Hospital. The boyfriend went to Long Island Medical Center in an ambulance.
The uncle says the girl will require plastic surgery on her arm. The two adults have been discharged.
Authorities removed the dog from the home.
Police say the mother's boyfriend was dog sitting the pit bull for his brother.
