Police say a woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Brentwood.
Maria Carmelina Arroba Gavilanez, 81, was walking on Ferris Avenue near the intersection of O'Rourke Street when she was struck around 7:15 a.m., police say. She was pronounced dead a short time later.
The vehicle is described as light in color. It fled eastbound.
Gavilanez was a mother of nine and a grandmother to more than 40. Her son Nelson Palomino says she had been on a monthlong visit from Ecuador.
"She was the support of all the family," Palomino says.
Neighbors in Brentwood say speeding has been an ongoing problem in the community.
