The Town of East Hampton is urging residents to avoid any contact with sick or dead wildlife following possible cases of avian influenza reported on the East End. While the CDC says the current public health risk is low, officials emphasize the importance of caution, particularly for pets that may be more susceptible to cross‑species transmission.

Residents who encounter sick or dead animals are advised not to touch them and to keep children and pets away. Dead birds should be reported to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The East Hampton Town Marine Patrol is also accepting reports of suspected Avian Influenza cases on public land. You may call the department at 631‑537‑7575 to make a report. If a carcass must be removed, the town recommends wearing disposable gloves, a mask, and eye protection, using a shovel to avoid direct contact, washing hands and clothing immediately afterward, and triple‑bagging the carcass before placing it in an outdoor trash container.

Suspected cases of avian influenza can be reported to the DEC by calling (631) 444‑0310 or filing a report online here.

Town officials will provide updates as needed.
