Fire officials say the blaze broke out at a home on Arleigh Road in East Meadow at around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. Nassau police say the house was fully engulfed in flames. Multiple fire departments responded.

According to the North Bellmore fire chief, the blaze was put out at 5:04 p.m., and the home sustained significant damage including the second floor partially collapsing.

Police say three adults and two children, including a newborn baby, and a dog were evacuated safely. They were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and are now staying with relatives. No one was seriously hurt.

Margarita Natal, a neighbor, said, “I think as long as the family’s fine. That’s the main thing. You can build a house, but as long as the family’s alive and well, that’s all that should matter."

Frank Lukasik, another neighbor, said, “It’s unfortunate for the family. They walked out with a drawer. That m was it, one drawer from a dresser, what they were able to salvage from this tragedy."

According to the North Bellmore fire chief, the cause of the fire is under investigation and appears to be accidental.

A neighbor and friend of the displaced family, Jessica Schiavone, started a donation to help the family. A drop-off site is set up outside her home at 2615 Arleigh Rd. in East Meadow.
