Suffolk County police say a Patchogue man has been arrested in connection to human remains that were found in East Patchogue.
According to police, the remains were found along Montauk Highway at around 3 p.m. Thursday.
Garry Cowell, 72, was arrested and charged with tampering with physical evidence and concealment of a corpse.
In court, the assistant district attorney told the judge that Cowell was with the victim when she died and that he took an axe, cut her body into pieces before loading it into a shopping cart and dispersing the remains across Suffolk County.
The ADA says a search warrant was executed Thursday afternoon and that’s when Cowell admitted to cutting up the body and showed police where he put the remains, as well as the ax.
The remains were transported to the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner for an autopsy and identification.
The family of Yvette Leonard, who was last seen on June 13, was in the courtroom for the arraignment.
