A teen was arrested Friday, accused of bringing a loaded handgun to William Floyd High School in Mastic Beach.
Detectives say the boy is 14 years old. Police are not releasing his name due to his age. They say the gun was discovered on him Friday afternoon.
According to the school district’s website, before dismissal Friday afternoon, a student was brought to an administrator’s office for possible vaping. When the student was searched with a metal detecting wand, school officials say a handgun was discovered on him, which police say was loaded.
The teen has been charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds.
School officials say the district will impose severe consequences.
Parents told News 12 that they were shocked.
“I think that’s crazy, and I wonder how did he get in? Where are his parents? Where did he have it? It’s crazy that kids can get access to a gun like that and bring it into school,” said Chaninah Fuller.
Police say the boy was held Friday night at the 7th Precinct and will be arraigned on Saturday as a juvenile offender.
A district spokesperson released a statement to News 12. It reads: "The student will be subject to severe consequences per the district code of conduct and the maximum allowable according to New York State education law."
