Two separate serious crashes unfolded just minutes from each other in the Town of Hempstead late Thursday, according to police.
The first happened at about 10 p.m., when a 44-year-old man driving northbound on North Franklin Street struck a pedestrian crossing the road, police say.
Authorities say the man suffered severe head trauma and was transported by ambulance for treatment. He is in stable but critical condition.
The driver remained at the scene.
The other crash happened just before midnight in West Hempstead.
Detectives say a man driving westbound on Hempstead Turnpike near Cherry Valley Road struck a Bird-battery operated scooter going eastbound on the turnpike.
The male operator suffered severe head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver remained at the scene.
Investigations are ongoing in both crashes, police say.
