The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) announced it disabled a slew of methamphetamine labs in the New York area Thursday, including two in Suffolk County.
Operation Red Fusion looked for certain red flags, such as purchases of red phosphorous and iodine. Those two chemicals, key components in cooking up the narcotic, led federal agents to nine suspected meth labs and 10 arrests. Two of the men arrested live in Patchogue and one lives in Ridge. Each suspect faces up to 20 years in prison, if convicted.
DEA officials say meth production and use is a rapidly growing problem in the country. According to Suffolk police, the drug's use is not yet as popular on Long Island as in other locations.
