Twenty-eight people, including a New York City police officer, were arrested on Long Island for their alleged involvement in an international drug ring, Suffolk police announced Wednesday.
Simultaneous raids were conducted at 28 locations in Suffolk County, Nassau County, and Rutland, New York. More than $3 million in cash and more than 100 pounds of marijuana were confiscated as a result of the five-month investigation, police said.
Authorities said the drugs, with an estimated street value of at least $250,000, were smuggled into the county from Canada. Twenty-three luxury cars, a 44-foot boat, 11 assault rifles, three shotguns, two sawed-off shotguns and 10 handguns were also seized, police said.
Police called Aldrin Borrell, 34, of Coram, the operation's ringleader. Glen Smokler, 37, of Coram, a 13-year NYPD veteran, was also arrested. The accused were indicted on various drug and conspiracy charges.
