The two new chiefs in the Suffolk County Police Department spoke to News 12 Tuesday about their future plans for the force.
Chief of Department Stuart Cameron and Chief of Detectives Gerard Gigante now run the day-to-day operations of the two largest divisions in the department.
Cameron says his top priorities are crime reduction, tackling the heroin epidemic, guns, traffic enforcement and homeland security.
"We're going to try and put people of good character and integrity in positions where officers will want to follow and be great leaders," Cameron told News 12.
Gigante, a 30-year veteran, was the commander of the 1st Precinct in West Babylon for nearly five years. Tuesday was his first day as chief of detectives.
"To be successful in police work, there's usually a boss behind to motivate and make sure his guys have what they need to get the job done," says Gigante.
Both chiefs say they are looking forward to working with the new commissioner to restore morale in the department and confidence from the public.
Timothy Sini, County Executive Steve Bellone's choice for police commissioner, still needs to be approved by the county Legislature.
As for the federal investigation into former Chief of Department James Burke, Cameron says he can't comment "without having concrete information."
