While people are usually urged to stay indoors when the temperature skyrockets, it’s not possible for those whose livelihoods depend on being out in the elements.

Michael Ktistakis, of All Island Lawn Maintenance, said the worst part of this heat is that “no matter what, we have to go out and support our families and keep our customers happy.”

He said in weather like this, he’s careful with choosing locations at which to work and he’s sure to wear light clothing and a hat, as well as drinking plenty of water.

The heat isn’t easy on police officers, especially considering all the equipment they wear.

Detective Lt. John Nagle, with the Glen Cove Police Department, told News 12 they urge officers to keep hydrated and to stay out of the sun when possible.

He said the patrol sergeants know to rotate officers in and out and make sure they get frequent breaks.
