Nassau County residents hoping for some relief at the gas pump this summer will have to wait a little longer.
State lawmakers recently approved a cap at $2 per gallon on the state gas tax and has allowed counties to follow suit. Thirteen other counties in New York have approved the measure, but Nassau Legislators let the Friday deadline pass without installing a cap. Officials say the measure cannot be considered again until September.
Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs (unaffiliated-Woodbury) says the average savings per family would only be $25 to $30 a year, while the hit to the county budget would be a little more than $20 million. Minority Leader Peter Schmitt (R-Massapequa) says savings would be closer to $450 dollars a year and says lawmakers need to step in to provide relief.
