Protesters gathered outside a New Hyde Park catering hall Thursday night while the Nassau County Friends of the NRA held a fundraising event.
A flyer for the event promoted raffles and auctions for guns.
Protesters said they're worried where those guns would wind up.
The general manager of the Inn at New Hyde Park told News 12 that they allowed the event just like they would allow any group to host an event there. They said they were not taking sides in a debate.
"We are completely neutral in this. We're not taking any sides at all," said Cynthia Pesce Osswald, of the Inn at New Hyde Park. "We do not discriminate, and we provide our services to everyone in the community."
Members of the Friends of the NRA described the fundraiser as a non-political event and that proceeds from it will benefit shooting sports programs.
At the Great Neck Library, advocates held a meeting on gun violence prevention that was attended by Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas. That meeting being held on the same night as the NRA fundraiser was a coincidence.
