Planned Nassau NRA group fundraiser, gun auction riles some residents

NEW HYDE PARK -

A planned fundraiser for the Nassau County Friends of the NRA is making some residents uneasy.

The event is scheduled for Sept. 27 at The Inn at New Hyde Park, and will include a dinner and auction for guns – including a .45-caliber pistol, a shotgun and a BB rifle.

Marc Stein, of Roslyn, told News 12 that he plans to protest the event.

"I'm not necessarily concerned that one of those people is dangerous. I'm concerned at the idea that a gun sale can be held in a local community near homes and schools in a wedding venue down the hall from people who are celebrating events,” he said.

The general manager of The Inn told News 12 that the group has a contract with the venue just like any group that would hold an event there. She said that hosting events does not mean that The Inn agrees with or sides with those organizations.

The Nassau County Friends of the NRA is a 501(c)(3) organization. A flyer for the event says the proceeds will benefit shooting sports programs in the community.

Laurence Dittmer did not organize this dinner, but is a founding member of the Nassau County Friends of the NRA. He says no monies gained from the event can be used “for any form of legislative or political purposes.”

He also says that every single firearm that is won by an attendee has to go through a background check.

A flyer for the event says any firearms won at the event will be transferred through the Camp-Site Sport Shop in Huntington.

News 12 called the event’s organizer for a comment about the auction, but that person hung up.
