A Coram man will spend the next 2 1/3 to 7 years in prison for killing a jogger in a hit-and-run crash.
Thomas Costa was sentenced Thursday for running down Karen Benjamin on Canal Road in Mount Sinai last year.
Police say they traced DNA from Benjamin's blood to blood on the side of Costa's car.
Costa was originally scheduled to be sentenced last January and would have received a lighter sentence, but the judge said he lied about his criminal history and revoked the plea deal.
Benjamin's family said they are not happy about the sentence Costa received. Despite prior convictions, under the current New York state law, Costa could only be sentenced for "leaving the scene."
Costa apologized to the Benjamin family before he was sentenced. The family says they will fight to make sure Costa serves a full sentence.
