Police say a man is dead following a police-involved shooting in Brentwood.
Suffolk police say Emanuel Johnson jumped out of a moving car during a police stop Thursday at 10:20 p.m. at the Brentwood LIRR Station.
They say the 21-year-old then ran into nearby woods and ended up behind the building of a hair salon a quarter-mile away.
Officers say that was when they tried to use a Taser on Johnson, but it failed.
They say Johnson then pulled out a .22 caliber handgun and possibly fired. Officers say that’s when they shot and killed him.
"Our officers have been trained to handle various situations, but in this case the suspect pointed a gun at our officers and their lives were in danger," says Suffolk Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart.
Hart also says, "We have recovered the suspect’s weapon and there was evidence that he was holding up the gun when he was shot and there is damage to the gun itself. It appears there is one exploded casing in the suspect’s weapon."
Suffolk police say Johnson has a long criminal history
“What we can say is he was a self-admitted Bloods gang member who had 14 prior arrests," says Hart.
Lucia Perez was in the salon Thursday night when the shooting happened. She says she heard eight to 10 gunshots from inside.
Suffolk police say their investigation is ongoing but are considering the shooting justified for now.
They also say the two officers involved in the shooting were not injured.
