Police are searching for the driver who fatally struck a man in a wheelchair and then fled the scene.
Officials say Michael Dora was in the right lane on Great East Neck Road when he was hit just after 9 p.m. Friday. He died at the hospital.
Dora, 40, had spina bifida, which causes the spinal cord to improperly develop. He moved to West Babylon last month with his mother, Esther.
Esther Dora says her son was heading to Wendy's restaurant at the time of the incident. She is terminally ill, and told News 12 that her son "kept her alive every day."
"Michael was the best son and person...everybody loved him," she says.
Investigators say they are looking for a dark vehicle, possibly a Nissan, with front-end damage.
Anyone with information can call Suffolk County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
