A man who was shot six times by Freeport police in July and indicted on criminal weapons charges spoke out Tuesday for the first time since the incident.
Franz Byer, who maintains he did not have a gun as police and prosecutors claim, insisted he was the real victim in this incident.
"I am a 21-year-old man that's been maimed and wounded by senseless violence," he said while surrounded by supporters at the A. Holly Patterson Facility, where he's receiving treatment. "I was attacked and assaulted by members of the Freeport Police Department, who shot me repeatedly in the back and have forever changed my life."
In September, Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice released a report in which officers were deemed justified for discharging their weapons in the July 14 incident. Freeport police stood by the report.
Fred Brewington, Byer's attorney, said the district attorney engaged in a cover up, discounting witnesses who wouldn't stick to the officers' story.
"We can show they twisted and manipulated facts for their own benefit."
