Long Island has the highest number of COVID-19 cases in a month

Long Island is seeing the highest number of COVID-19 cases in a month amid new concerns about the delta variant.
Dr. Sharon Nachman, chief of pediatric infectious diseases at Stony Brook Hospital, says the delta variant is the No. 1 circulating virus at the moment.
"It is 60 times more contagious than the original alpha variant that we saw back at the start of the COVID pandemic," she said.
According to Johns Hopkins University, states with below-average vaccination rates on average have almost tripled the rate of new COVID-19 cases, compared to states with above average vaccination rates.
"The states that have low vaccination records are the states that are seeing increased COVID hospitalizations. And if in fact some of those hospitals in those states are running out of ventilators, we don't want to be in that situation again," Nachman said.
With more than 1 million people on Long Island with at least one dose of the vaccine, a lot of the population is vaccinated. But Nachman remains concerned about young people who are unvaccinated.
"If you take a COVID variant that is highly contagious and put it in the noses of someone who's not vaccinated and is already likely to be a superspreader, that spells trouble for everyone that they see," she said.
According to Dr. Anthony Fauci, more than 99% of people who died from COVID-19 in June were unvaccinated.
