Members of the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless were outside on Tuesday to help people deal with the cold temperatures.
The group says it also is seeing an increase of people who need help due to the rising prices of food and housing on Long Island, combined with a lack of resources - especially in the last couple of months.
It is giving out the winter essentials at the bus terminal in Hempstead, including hand warmers, hats, gloves, scarves and blankets.
The short-term goal is to make sure people in need are warm on freezing nights, then ultimately, finding them permanent housing and working on their mental health and overall well-being.
“I think especially with benefits being cut, it’s been making it a lot more challenging for people, and the lack of resources definitely there’s a lot more people on the street," said Analicia Gonzalez, with the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless.
In addition to food and supplies, the coalition is also providing information about where people can go to stay warm and resources that are available to them this winter.
