Some residents in Cedarhurst say they can't find a parking spot on their own street because Long Island Rail Road commuters are avoiding meter and permit parking in the station lot.

The station's metered parking costs $1 for two hours. After eight hours, commuters can get an expensive parking ticket. Jeff Lazar understands why LIRR commuters walk a block and park in his residential neighborhood.

"You walk a little extra and you get to save a little money," he says. 

Taxi manager Allan Levy admits he's taking lots of fares from residential parking spaces and dropping them off at the Cedarhurst station.

Appeals have been made to the village, and Mayor Benjamin Weinstock says efforts are underway to solve the problem by creating permit parking for residents. 

"We're looking to see if we can establish a system by where the residents will be able to find parking spaces more easily," says the mayor. 

He says nearly two dozen new spaces have been created on Oak Avenue and Clinton Avenue to ease parking for residents.
