(11/09/06) FARMINGDALE - A massive voluntary recall of the generic form of Tylenol is under way Thursday after one producer discovered metal inside some caplets.
Perrigo manufactures the painkiller acetaminophen for several large chains under the stores' banners, including Wal-Mart, Kroger, CVS and BJ's Wholesale. Smaller pharmacies also carry Perrigo's products under various labels. The Michigan-based company ran 70 million pills through a metal detector, which found traces of metal in approximately 200 capsules. Some fragments were miniscule, while other metal pieces were as large as one-third of an inch long.
FDA officials classify the voluntary recall as Class II. They say there is minimal risk for serious injury, but one could suffer cuts to the mouth and throat or stomach discomfort. The FDA list of batch numbers, distributors and store brands were released as well. The brand name Tylenol is unaffected by the recall and safe to consume as prescribed.
