Last weekend, the scene at North and South Fork beaches was described as "hellish" by officials and residents who saw a massive influx of out-of-towners.
Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman says beachgoers were unable to maintain social distancing amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Witnesses called the scene "unbelievable" and saw hundreds of cars descend on the area. Droves came from as far away as New Jersey to park cars on dead-end streets, set up camp and went fishing.
According to Southampton officials, after numerous complaints, including some for social distancing and even public urination, the beach was shut down and restrictions were put in place.
"I followed up with new regulations limiting access to the beaches and parking just to people who are staying in our community," says Schneiderman. "It's unfortunate but we are in the middle of a pandemic."
Southampton officials say they hope newly posted signs will keep nonresidents from crowding the beaches. Most Long Island beaches have similar restrictions -- but in North Sea, residents say this has never happened before, but must be this way for now.
According to a news release from the supervisor's office:
"The new Emergency Order (#7.2 of 2020) limits the use of all town beaches, not just parking lots, to residents and legal renters until June 5th and restricts roadside parking near beaches as well. Emergency Orders like this, suspending local laws, are limited to no more than five days. However, Supervisor Schneiderman indicated the order is likely to be extended."
