A judge has ordered Garden City to bring affordable housing to the area.
Nearly 10 years ago, the village changed zoning codes to restrict multi-family housing. Critics said the move was done to keep minorities out.
"Garden City has always been the same - it's 93 percent white," says Diane Goins, of New York Community for Change, the organization that sued Garden City. "There's never been any low-income folks there and no housing for us."
The judge's ruling requires that 10 percent of future multi-family developments be set aside for affordable housing.
Garden City officials have insisted that the village did not intend to discriminate. The village board has 30 days to decide whether it will appeal the decision.
