The Nassau County Legislature is getting more time to hand over a multimillion-dollar settlement to the family of a murdered New Cassel mother.A Central Islip judge ruled today that members of the Legislature can review an internal police report on the handling of the Joanna Bird case.As News 12 Long Island has reported, the 24-year-old woman was stabbed to death in March 2009 by her ex-boyfriend, Leonardo Valdez-Cruz. Bird's family sued Nassau police for failing to enforce an order of protection against Valdez-Cruz.The county approved an $8 million settlement with Bird's family, but lawmakers wanted to see the police report before they signed off on it.Fred Brewington, the attorney for the Bird family, said today's ruling is a warning for the county to bring the matter to a close. The judge told the Legislature that if it doesn't agree to the settlement by January, he'd consider throwing it out and setting a trial date.Jury takes up case of Joanna Bird murder
