The Democratic Party is sounding the alarm over President Donald Trump’s sweeping new tax and immigration bill - warning it could gut Medicaid and hit blue states like New York the hardest.
In his first television interview in the tri-state since being elected Democratic National Committee Chair, Ken Martin spoke at length about the legislation with our Senior Political Reporter Tara Rosenblum, calling it "devastating," for families in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
House Republicans unveiled President Donald Trump’s big tax cut bill last week that includes more than $900 billion in cuts largely to Medicaid to help cover the cost of $4.5 trillion in tax breaks.
Tallying hundreds of pages, the legislation revealed late on Sunday, May 11, is touching off the biggest political fight over health care since Republicans tried but failed to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, during Trump’s first term in 2017.
While Republicans insist they are simply rooting out “waste, fraud and abuse” to generate savings with new work and eligibility requirements, Democrats warn that millions of Americans will lose coverage. A preliminary estimate from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said the proposals would reduce the number of people with health care by 8.6 million over the decade.
Martin also opened up about the party’s strategy to win back the House, and predicted that the path to power will once again run through the tri-state.
"We have to protect Democrats that we have in office and we have some that are in purple districts...but there is a number of opportunities for us as well, including in Mike Lawler's district and Elise Stefanik's district...we believe we can win, and at the end of the day, we are going to be investing a lot of resources in New York" said Martin.
