For one weekend each year, the sounds of crashing waves at Jones Beach are replaced by the roar of jet engines as thousands of spectators gather for one of Long Island's most anticipated summer traditions.
This year's Jones Beach Air Show also celebrated America's 250th anniversary, featuring military and civilian aviators performing breathtaking aerial demonstrations for packed crowds along the shoreline.
"I just love when I can hear nothing from the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds. I love it all," said Wantagh resident Alex Sulfarro.
Families filled the beach as they watched pilots perform high-speed aerobatics, synchronized formations and precision flying throughout the day.
"I think it's a great outing. I enjoy going to the beach and celebrating the country," said Steven Silverstein of Plainview.
Many attendees came specifically to see some of the world's most recognizable flight demonstration teams.
"We're going to see the Blue Angels, the Air Force, flying. That's such a dream come true," said Jimmy Jiang of Deer Park.
The U.S. Navy Blue Angels made their highly anticipated return to Jones Beach, while the United Kingdom's famed Red Arrows made their debut at the event as part of the America's 250th anniversary celebration. Spectators also enjoyed performances from other international teams.
"We've been a few times, but we'd like to see the British group and the UAE group," said Mark Silverstein of Plainview.
The show featured a full lineup of aerial performances, including gravity-defying aerobatics, precision formation flying and parachute demonstrations that kept the crowd looking skyward.
For the pilots, performing in front of thousands is just as rewarding as the audience experience.
"It is the best job I ever had as a pilot," said Red Arrows member Stuart Roberts. "You really get good at doing flying stuff. You fly the airplane to its limits the whole time. You are in maximum formation the whole time to make the aircraft do what it needs to do. You get to go flying with your friends and become really close as a team."
Beyond the thrilling performances, the event served as a tribute to the people, pride and spirit that continue to define the United States 250 years after its founding.
