Students returned to class at the Jack Abrams School in Huntington Station three years after community violence shut it down.

The school has been renamed the Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math, which will be the focus of classes there.

The school was shut down in 2010 due to a rise in violent crime in the area. In the past three years, police say crime has gone down 19 percent due to increased patrols and a new police substation next to the school.

The school has 150 students in grades three to five this year, and more are expected to attend next year.
