Investigators say a fire at a Brentwood home was set by a volunteer firefighter.
Court records show the man charged with setting the fire on Sherman Street is 24-year-old John Kovalsky, a volunteer firefighter at the Brentwood Fire Department. The fire occurred on May 12.
The family says Kovalsky can be seen on home surveillance video.

"He came down the driveway, turned around looked at his handy work, went back under because he decided it wasn’t good enough, and started getting the fire going even better. Then went down, leaned against the car and admired his handy work and drove away,” says Robert Beecher, of Brentwood.

The family says they were told Kovalsky then returned to fight the fire.

They say not only was their childhood home destroyed, but their father who lived in the house, died just two months ago, and now things connecting them with his memory are ruined.
The Brentwood Fire Department released a statement saying in part, "Though the individual charged with this crime enjoys the right to a presumption of innocence, due to the very serious nature of these charges, the individual will be suspended pending the outcome of the investigation."

Kovalsky is due back in court next month.
