Suffolk County police arrested two men Tuesday for selling cannabis without a license at a Huntington Station store.
The search warrant was executed at Cloud Smoke Cigar & Convenience where a large quantity of concentrated cannabis, cannabis packing equipment and flavored vape products were discovered.
The Long Island business is one of many that have been caught since New York has been cracking down on the illegal sale of cannabis products.
Director of Investigations and Enforcement for the Office of Cannabis Management Daniel Haughney says over 1,000 pounds of illegally sold adult cannabis products have been confiscated in just a few weeks.
The owners of the Suffolk County store now face charges of the unauthorized sale of cannabis products without a license and criminal possession of cannabis.
There is a fine of up to $10,000 per day in New York for a location that operates as an unlicensed cannabis retail business. The fines can get even higher when members of the Office of Cannabis Management or other agencies discover more violations.
A business that has been cited for selling marijuana illegally is also subject to shame in the form of a sign that lets the public know the store broke the law.
"With both agencies working concurrently, it makes it a lot easier for us to kind of effectively bring all of the forces to bear against these illicit shops," Haughney says.
There was no sign at Cloud Smoke Cigar & Convenience.
Haughney says his office's goal is to shut down places that sell cannabis illegally.
