About 600 Hempstead students will be going to a school in Franklin Square after their building was damaged in a fire.

The Aug. 7 fire at Prospect School stemmed from a lightning strike. Administrators scrambled to find a new site to educate the hundreds of kindergartners and pre-K students.

On Thursday, Hempstead schools acting Superintendent Regina Armstrong says they found the perfect temporary home in the form of St. Catherine of Sienna School.

Armstrong took News 12 on a tour of the former Catholic school building, which offers 22 classrooms, a large gym, a play area and cafeteria. Armstrong says it was important to find a space where all the students could be housed together.

School officials will be holding information sessions for Prospect School parents next week to help prepare students for the move. News 12 is told that if all goes as planned, students will start school at St. Catherine's on Sept. 17.

At Thursday night's school board meeting, Armstrong thanked everyone who helped make the transition as smooth as possible.
